Mumbai, Sep 24 (IANS) Bollywood actor Salman Khan's latest action movie "Wanted" didn't get favourable reviews from the critics but has done good business by earning about Rs.38 crore across the country in its first week.
Surprisingly, it is the single screens where the movie has fared well compared to the multiplexes by generating 70 percent business.
"Till now, we had undermined the business contributed by the single screen theaters, but this film has made us realise that such theatres are still the bosses," said trade analyst Taran Adarsh.
Said another trade analyst: "Single screen theaters have been historically known to cater to testosterone boosting movies - action dramas. 'Wanted' is exactly that kind of film. Then you have the price of the tickets, approximately less than half that of multiplexes, with the advantage of watching it on a 70mm screen. Quite naturally, audiences will choose single screens over multiplexes," he added.
Exhibitor Manoj Desai of Gaiety Cinemas, a multiplex, believes that with "Wanted", single screens have finally shown their clout.
"'Wanted' has got the film industry and also the single screen cinemas out of the ICU. The film has got 100 percent collections till now and it is only going to get better," said Desai.
Starring Salman in the lead, "Wanted" is a bone-cruncher about a guy who takes on a city filled with scum.
Wanted' is an action-packed film directed by choreographer-turned-actor Prabhu Dheva. It brings Salman Khan back into the action theme.
The film is about Radhe (Salman Khan) who is a hardcore gangster. A sharpshooter with a sharp brain, he works for mafia leader Gani Bhai (Prakash Raj), but on his own terms. With no fear, Radhe single handedly eliminates Gani Bhai's enemies one by one; making more enemies in the process than he bargained for...He is shocked when a young and pretty lady named Jhanvi (Ayesha Takia Azmi) confesses her liking to him. Inspector Talpade's (Mahesh Manjrekar) lustful eyes fall on Jhanvi. He has no idea that she has a soft corner for Radhe.
Whether it's the Golden Gang or Data Pawle's Gang; everybody wants the biggest piece of Mumbai and the only way to get it is to eliminate who ever stands in their way. As Mumbai goes under a dangerous gang war, Commissioner Ashraf Khan vows to make the city free of crime and starts a campaign by catching 200 criminals in a single day.
It's a free for all with gangsters from rival gangs out to get each other and the police out to get all of them. And in a surprising twist, Radhe becomes the most wanted man in Mumbai.
Radhe is stuck in a situation where the gangsters want him dead because he knows too much while the police want him alive because they're desperate to know what he know
