Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai movie review

The Movie JAANE KAHAN SE AAYI HAI works for its light moments mainly. It’s unique to think of a love story between a human and an alien from venus, but Milap created it well with assorted characters and sets the story in the bollywood film industry and has several laugh-inducing moments.

But the problem arises when the focus shifts to the prem kahani in its second half. For, the story follows the trodden path [it becomes a love triangle] and embarks on the same old route that all love stories usually embark upon. If Milap had the courage to think out of the box, he should’ve ensured that the film remained true to its essence. Why didn’t he think of an equally wacky second hour?

Notwithstanding its predictable second half, JAANE KAHAN SE AAYI HAI is a decent watch that provides ample laughs.

JAANE KAHAN SE AAYI HAI is the story of Rajesh [Riteish Deshmukh], a simple Gujarati boy who’s been looking for love since he was a baby. Thoroughly unsuccessful in his endeavours, he nearly gives up till he meets Natasha [Sonal Sehgal].

Desh [Ruslaan Mumtaz] is the youngest superstar in the country. Mothers want to adopt him and their daughters want to marry him. But when will he find the girl of his dreams? Their worlds turn upside down when Tara [Jacqueline Fernandez], an alien from Venus, lands on Earth in the search of true love.

Milap tickles your funny bone at the very outset. The story of a loser, his search for true love, his ‘naughty’ father, his ‘oversexed’ friend and his experiences at his work place [on a film set] bring a constant smile on your face. In fact, one of the key factors why the first half works is because the casting is just right and the actors carry off the assigned roles so well.

But the second half fumbles because the story gets very old-fashioned. If the alien could travel all the way to earth to find love, why couldn’t she profess love to the man she loves the most? Why develop human emotions all of a sudden?

This is Milap’s directorial debut and he clearly shows a flair for comic entertainers. Sajid-Wajid’s music is pleasant, with the title track standing out. Attar Singh Saini’s cinematography is perfect.

Riteish enacts his part efficiently. That he’s at home in comedy is well-known by now, but the actor is equally at ease in emotional moments and also romantic sequences. Jacqueline is easy on the eyes. In fact, she seems more comfortable this time. Vishal Malhotra is superb and contributes enormously in making the proceedings lively. Ruslaan carries the teen heart-throb look very well. Sonal Sehgal is competent.

Farah Khan is a complete natural. Satish Shah is excellent. Supriya Pilgaonkar does well too. Akshay Kumar, Priyanka Chopra, Sajid Khan and Amrita Rao make special appearances in the film.

On the whole, JAANE KAHAN SE AAYI HAI is a light-hearted entertainer targeted at the youth. It has a thoroughly entertaining first half, but a routine second half. A decent watch!

Muskurake Dekh Zara movie review

It’s hard to believe that Anurag Kashyap who advocates changes in Bollywood cinema can write such an amateurish film. Even worse, he just needed to give the Tamil hit ‘Youth’ which was inspired by the Telugu earner ‘Chiru Navvutho’ some element which could have inspired the Hindi speaking heart but he seems to be uninspired by this movie on the funda of love and friendship and he tries to just sign the muster by completing the film anyhow.
The question that crossed my mind time and again while watching this film was, did Anurag Kashyap really pen this movie? The sole factor that stands out is Ranjit Barot's musical score and the panoramic locales where a few songs have been filmed. Frankly, there's no other reason why you should exit the theatre with a muskurahat.

Gashmeer Mahajani aspires to be a chef. He arrives in Mumbai, after his bride-to-be elopes from the mandap. He falls in love with Twinkle Patel, but the problem is, she loves someone else [Hiten Paintal], who, incidentally, turns out to be the guy Gashmeer's bride-to-be had eloped with. In the end, expectedly, Twinkle realises that her heart beats for Gashmeer.

If the story is as old as the hills, the execution of the subject is equally old-fashioned. Sincethe writing is so inferior, neither does the love story, nor the forced comedy track manage to catch your attention.

Gashmeer is energetic and confident, but needs to work on his styling. Twinkle is raw and it shows. Hiten Paintal has just one expression throughout. Ranjeet, Om Katare and Tiku Talsania are adequate.

On the whole, Muskurake Dekh Zara has no chances absolutely.‘Muskurake Dekh Zara’ is a story of a young 'boy man' named Vivek. It's a story of simple emotions and disappointments of love and life. Vivek (Gashmeer Mahajani) has an 'upright' attitude, and ability to put people in their place and add lightness into moody and mundane situations not only when he interacts with his life's love Preeti (Twinkle Patel) but also when he encounters and jests with the simple, funny and harmless folks - like the eccentric live in DLT (Duniya Lal Tripati), the 'badnaseeb' hotel manager Khaatkar , the curious curio shop owner Elton, the heroine's eternally inebriated Chaacha who feels that one's 'spirit' can be derived only from downing spirits. The film's lighter moments beautifully intersperse with the hero's portrayal of a character of depth.

An incident of embarrassment drives Vivek from his hometown to Mumbai where he falls in love with Preeti. His leadership qualities and unusual understanding of situations makes his friends look up to him. It is his wonderful ability to reason that wins him the love of Preeti and finally put the villain Prakash Raj at bay.

With presence and not prejudice of the mind, Vivek deals with life's various and varied situations as they happen to him
The theme is matured but handled immaturely and suffers from editing jerks, unwanted songs and unconvincing comedy coming in between. The writer Anurag Kashyap seems not at all interested and he just wants to complete the film and in the process even lifts the dialogue straight from the original.

There’s no harm in the story to be predictable, the treatment and the screenplay holds the key. When you cast a new face Gashmeer Mahajani (impressive) you need to maintain some freshness in the proceeding to keep the audience engrossed but in MKDJ the film struggles to move and when it does (during the second half) then its already too late.

The lead actress twinkle Patel lacks charm and talent.

Shrek Forever After movie review
Midlife crisis, Shrek (Mike Myers)? Yup. Specially when you are forced to rise and shine everyday with the cheery cackle of your brood; when you must burp and feed them and dabble with ogre shit relentlessly; when you must parrot `Ever After' each time wife Fiona (Cameron Diaz) mumbles `Happily' on the dinner table; when you can't snooze in your favourite chair because high-spirited friends, Donkey (Eddie Murphy) and Puss (Antonio Banderas) want to spent some quality buddy time with you. And more importantly, when you are denied that one single pleasure of yours due to pressing house work: a relaxed mud bath, while the Carpenters blare their popular `Top of the World' number.

So what does our friendly neighbourhood ogre do to get back his roar and stop being a jolly green joke? He signs a contract with the wicked character from the Brothers Grimm, Rumplestiltskin, turns his back to his friends and family, yells on wife Fiona and returns to a time when he wasn't born. This being a time when Donkey was a slave to the witches, Puss was an overweight domestic cat and Fiona was leading a band of rebel ogres to free Far, Far Away land from the misrule of Rumplestiltskin. But it doesn't take long before the green ogre realises he has ended up with a raw deal. Since he hasn't actually been born, the day will end with his end too and he will never be able to return to his family unless he manages to snatch one true kiss with Fiona. Now that ain't an easy task because Fiona is in militant feminist form, too involved in insurgency to focus on romance. HowAll good things must end, right? Movie franchises are no different, really, and despite the fact that series eventually run their course and it’s better if they’re put out to pasture the studio can always look forward to, assuming things have been successful, enough years of continued income from licensed goods until it’s no longer awkward to discuss a reboot with fresh actors and a fresh story.

After three successful movies beginning back in 2001, Shrek Forever After is being heralded as the last in the popular Shrek series. In the previous three films we’ve followed Shrek from a simple – and feared – ogre to happily married ogre to father of his own little baby ogres, all with his friends such as Donkey (Eddie Murphy) and Puss in Boots (Antonio Banderas) beside him as well as his wife Fionna (Cameron Diaz). The latest movie finds Shrek growing uncomfortable in his role as respected father and husband and so winds up making a wish to Rumplestilzkin that he could just go back to being a regular ogre. He finds himself in a world where he’d never been born and where he must undue whatever caused this situation if he hopes to live happily ever after. does he convince her about the happily-ever-after that lies ahead....

Love Sex Aur Dhoka movie review

What appears to be a Tacky commercial playing on the cinema screen soon reveals it self to be the clever start of the third installment of Dibakar Banerji’s Delhi underbelly series.

A young couple bred in India (circa: Post DDLJ) makes a mushy diploma film that pays homage to Yash Chopra. They believe so truly in the power of the ‘happy ending’ (no pun intended) that they start to become the love-lorn Raj & Simran in real life. Their obsession with the camera documents their love story 24/7. They elope and exchange vows before a god who could have been hired from a film city temple. The naive lovers even prepare to face the ire of the girls’ dangerous family, being blinded by filmy dialogues like ‘now that we are married, your father will accept us.’

Slow motion shots, romantic music swells and amusing simple-minded banter suddenly jump cut to brutal reality. Your eyes are left open, wide, like a live camera, for the rest of this triple loaded LSD trip.

Welcome to the world of reality entertainment, where the star is you. Here, sex, betrayal and murder rate higher than Ekta Kapoor’s soap operas. With such easy access to the video camera, everyone enjoys voyeuristic real-life drama.

CC tv & handheld camera’s peek shamelessly into the lives of three young couples. These stories are deftly intercut to tell an ironic tale of rose tinted love, lust that deceives and the ultimate betrayal; the realization that the viewfinder has replaced the soul.

A desperate young man needs to pay nasty thugs who are out to recover a loan. He battles his conscience while setting up to shoot a sex video with a love struck colleague at a departmental store. To make a quick buck, he abuses his access to the closed circuit camera set up and takes advantage of the girl.

A sting operation cameraman, fallen from grace before his drama hungry office, must convince a model to seek revenge from a tacky pop star. She films the arrogant singer as he abuses his position, by offering her work for sex.

Interweaving stories cleverly, ‘Love, Sex Aur Dhoka’, holds a stark mirror up to society. And just when the content starts to get uncomfortable, it uses a zoom lens to shoot deeper into the dark recesses of the soul. As the line between personal and public blurs, you realize that this trip will be an unforgettable one.

Writers Dibakar Bannerjee, Urmi Juvekar and Kanu Behl write a flawless script that is ‘ballsy’, ‘edgy’ and extremely poignant. The film is edited beautifully by Namrata Rao, whose awe-inspiring cut is supported by a great sound design by Pritam Das. The dialogue is crisp and witty and sincerely takes on the flavor of the North belt.

The performances by the young cast are shockingly convincing. Watch out for Anshuman Jha and Shruti as the couple that elopes into ‘a not so Bollywood’ climax, Raj Kumar Yadav and Neha Chauhan as the couple in the store sex video are excellent as are Amit Sial and Arya Devdutta as the cameraman and model planning a sting operation. Henry Tangdias music video "king" Loki Local is hilarious. This last story takes it time to unfold as it delivers the films thought provoking closing message.

This film clearly belongs to the unconventional craftsman that is Dibakar Banerji. He takes what must be the budget of three television episodes, works with a fresh, in-experienced cast and boldly takes sex into mainstream cinemas. Banerji scores a well-deserved hatrick after ‘Khosla Ka Ghosla’ and ‘Oye Lucky Lucky Oye’. Watch ‘LSD’ and tell your friends about it. This film may rely on your word of mouth publicity for its success.

Warning. Do not expect conventional cinema. This LSD pulls you into a trip that you can love, you can hate, but you cannot escapThe promos have been intriguing, there’s been a lot of talk about the film and its title song is this year’s ‘Emosanal Atyaachaar’. What all these things lead to, basically, is a fair degree of expectations. Does Love Sex Aur Dhokha, or its smart acronym LSD, meet its potential?

Before answering that, it’s necessary to know why LSD is an important film – it’s raw, unflinching and brutally real in its portrayal of ‘young India’; it breaks the formula in more ways than one: the filming technique is novel by Indian standards (seen recently in Paranormal Activity) and the screenplay is episodic; each story (by Urmi Juvekar) has been inspired by, what can be called, ‘newspaper headlines.’

In the first story, a film student, Rahul (Jha), whose diploma film is a kind of homage to his idol Aditya Chopra’s Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, falls in love with his film’s lead actress, Shruti. Their love story enfolds in typical DDLJ fashion, a tyrant of a father included.

The lovers, in true filmi style, get married in a temple with the hope that Shruti’s parents will accept them once they are hitched. But cruel fate, in the form of a dhokha, awaits them.

In the second chapter, a young guy, Adarsh (Yadav), in desperate need of money fakes an affair with a saleswoman, Rashmi (Chauhan), at a shopping store. He has a plan – to seduce the girl and shoot footage of the two having sex, and then to sell that in order to make a quick buck.

In the final part, a journalist Prabhat (Sial) wants to revive his career by performing a sting operation on pop star Loki Local (Tangri), who lures models into sexual favours with dreams of launching them in his music videos. But things go awry for Prabhat during the sting.

All three stories have a common thread: not just the fact that all of them have a bit of love, sex and an element of dhokha in them, but also that all three get captured in cameras even when the characters don’t always know about it.

In the first story, Rahul shoots his interactions with Shruti on his film camera; in the second, the CCTVs at the store capture the goings-on; and in the third, it’s the sting camera doing the job.

Banerjee weaves three inspired-by-life stories in his endeavour to entertain and shock and make a larger point about the voyeuristic nature of our society, all at the same time. LSD is edgy, provocative and honest. And for that, kudos for the filmmaker is in order.

Sadly, though, the film’s not without its flaws. It lacks the humour – or at least effective humour – that was the driving force behind Banerjee’s earlier two National award-winning films, Khosla Ka Ghosla and Oye Lucky.

The camera, which is an integral part of the script, makes its present felt in places it shouldn’t be. Why people – whether it’s a budding filmmaker or a sting journalist – would keep their cameras on at most times, even when it’s not connected to their work is hard to fathom.

The writing is inconsistent too. The homage to Chopra and his films is a big bore. The diploma film is shot like a spoof, which could have been very entertaining, but which has been executed much better in MTV shows.

The first story unfolds like any love tale would – something you have seen in umpteen films, the only novelty being the style of filming it. You wonder where it’s going finally.

Its culmination, though, is among the film’s strongest sequences. Banerjee doesn’t prepare you for it – that may justify the staid treatment leading up to it – and jolts you with its violent force. You only wish the journey till that point had been a bit more engrossing.

The second story is much more interesting. Moments between Adarsh and Rashmi are very real and the affair believable. The third story is the most entertaining. But you really yearn for LSD to unravel itself at a faster pace.

Even with a running time that is shorter than two hours, LSD drags. Once the novelty of watching the film from secret cameras wears out, you realise there’s not always much to engross you by way of a gripping narrative or smart writing.

Experimentation for the heck of it doesn’t always work. Luckily for LSD, even with its shortcomings, you can’t but help laud the effort of Banerjee and his team to dish out something ‘different.’ For the director, it’s a worthy follow-up to his earlier two successes.

The casting deserves accolades, with every actor fitting-in their roles to perfection. Singling out any of them would be pointless, with each of them putting in confident, natural performances. The title song, shown in the end, cannot be missed.

Well Done Abba movie review

.WelDonAba tells the story of Armaan Ali, a driver working in Mumbai, who takes a one month leave from his employer to find a groom for his daughter, who lives at his native village near Hyderabad but returns back after three months. Armaan’s employer decides to sack him, but is persuaded to listen to the reason why Armaan was late. The movie inspired from a marathi movie “Jaau tithe khau” of Makarand Anaspure. BomanIrani ’s Well Done Abb film received favourable response from top critics in India. It received 6.5/10 at ReviewGang. Anupama Chopra of NDTV writes – “The end result is that Well Done Abba is heart-felt and intermittently funny”, while Nikhat Khazmi of times of India writes “The film is a sheer delight, with the events unfolding in a breezy, comic vein which keeps the ribs relentlessly tickling” watchWellDoneAbbaonline or WellDoneAbbawatWell Done Abba, earlier titled Abba Ka Kuan, also stars Sonali Kulkarni, Ravi Kishan, Ila Arun, Salim Ghouse, Rajit Kapoor, Yashpal Sharma, Ravi Jhankal and Rahul Singh. The film is inspired by two short stories - Narsaiyyan Ki Bavdi by Jeelani Bano and Phulwa Ka Pul by Sanjeev.

The film has been narrated in a comic and ironic vein. It is an engaging story of Armaan Ali (Boman Irani), a driver working for a Senior Executive in Mumbai, who goes on leave. He wants to find a match for his teenage daughter Muskaan (Minissha Lamba), who stays with his brother Rehman Ali (Boman) and his wife Salma (Ila Arun). When Armaan returns to work after 3 months his young employer wants to sack him. But Armaan Ali has a story to tell.

The story he tells is a humorous and often hilarious account of the events and happenings that delayed him from returning after a month. He avails a government scheme to dig a well in his agricultural patch. Things spiral out of control so much so that the Government is about to collapse! The question remains, how true is this compelling story!

The film is a political satire that veers from the farcical to the often witty and sharp but largely ironic comedy without losing sight of its central theme that deals with the many development projects that the government has initiated which frequently get hijacked by systemic corruption. Among the high points of the film are the brilliant performances of the actors and the pulsating, lyrical and melodious songs composed by Shantanu Moitra, who is back after scoring a hit soundtrack for blockbuster film 3 Idiots, but with a different style in this film. Hum Tum aur Ghost movie review

Speaking to the dead isn't just a theory but documented in Indian mythology. So, 'Hum, Tum Aur Ghost', releasing March 26, 2010, in India represents a concept Bollywood borrowed from history and of course Hollywood. The West started this trend 20 years ago, but in India the 'Vikram aur Betal' saga has lived forever. The fascination with ghosts/ spirits continues in Bollywood. Arshad Warsi, who had shot to fame in his 'Ishqiya', conceived the movie's idea and wrote the script along with director Kabeer Kaushik. Both are known for their entertaining styles. Kaushik (of the 'Saher' and 'Champu' fame) is a good comedy director and had worked with Warsi, who is mainly credited with the story of 'Hum, Tum Aur Ghost'. Though, the story smells of Hollywood's 'Ghost Town', Warsi denies getting such inspiration, dismissing it the similarities as coincidental.

The story depicts Armaan's (Arshad Warsi) life is picture perfect. Yet, a loving girlfriend and a great job as a fashion photographer hasn't made life altogether perfect as it may seem. Armaan is a chronic insomniac but for some reason he isn't suffering a medical sleeping disorder. As it goes, he hears voices that torture him, don't let him have his peace - voices that nobody else can hear. His friends sympathize with him, but girlfriend, Gehna (Dia Mirza), is irritated with his weird behavior and her father constantly berates him for his fondness for the bottle.

There's no explaining Armaan's behavior. Making it worse is the fact that he talks to himself, or, to people, no one can see! Well, Armaan begins to believe that he possesses a special ability to connect with the souls that haven't crossed over. And, he sets out on a mission to help three souls - a child, an old man, and a young woman. An exciting and fun journey that follows makes Armaan discover the lives of his three special companions and get closer to them, inevitably frustrating Gehna even more. Though, this helps him sort of find himself - the crux of the plot.

'Hum, Tum Aur Ghost' is a compilation of skilled performances by Arshad who we now feel has learned the art of becoming likable and believable on screen! A complete natural, this is perhaps his best delivery of art. Dia is completely fresh with a performance in which she looks ethereal yet exceptional. Boman is the tremendous himself. Sandhya Mridul does not have much of a role. Zehra Naqvi is convincing. Shernaz Patel is wasted and so also Tinnu Anand. Javed Sheikh is the usual. Asawari Joshi is perfect for her part. Music from Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's trio is well done. Ashok Mehta's cinematography is excellent.

click for larger view
The movie's hallmark is certainly the performances of its cast. Though, the flick falls short of convincing the audience on a murky subject. Screenplay is weak and sets don't just make it. A good try, Warsi! But, 'Hum, Tum Aur Ghost' is a terrible waste of what could have been pulled off as a terrific idea. Don't waste your time watching this flick unless you have nothing else to do

Prince movie review

Look what the cool cat dragged in! It’s not a bird (though he does fly across the sky). It’s not a plane (though many of those in many shapes and sizes are seen hovering in the film’s spectrally-shot skyline). And it’s definitely not Superman. Though Mr Oberoi wouldn’t mind being one.

Hey guys, it’s our own Vivek Oberoi, playing hard-ball with various girls, gadgets gizmos and gimmicks.

Vivek plays Prince, a James Bond on a mission not quite impossible travelling at a speed faster than sound. Prince has no choice. He has lost all his memory which has been sucked out of him like juice gone through a sugarcane grinder.

To his credit, Oberoi carries off the ceaseless stint with the stunt with arresting aplomb. Most often because of his memory loss we see him wearing a look like he just smelt something foul in the kitchen and isn’t sure if it’s the milk got burnt or his mom’s favourite recipe simmering in a pot.

Oh, there are no weeping moms in the potty plot. Only screeching wheels, high-octane stunts and high-octave songs shot mostly like music videos rather than as integral parts of the story. And then there are the 3 Mayas, each trying to outdo the other in the stunts and the clothes, or lack of them. They all seem to love our hero to death, an entity which lurks in every slick corner of this emotion-less but attractive package of oomph and wallops.

Where, you are not allowed to wonder, is the plot leading to? Why is Prince so hyper about his memory-loss? It will come back to him, like a blast from the past. Quite like the bolt that finally hits the film’s arch villain Sarang (played by someone called Isaiah).

Oberoi’s Prince goes into convulsions of self-doubt.

Be warned. Prince is more the Bourne territory than “Ghajini”. The expertly-executed stunts (Allan Amin, you are the man!) frequently see our hero jumping down high-rise buildings in breathtaking leaps of fate, with the camera (Vishnu Rao) pulling back in respectful awe. Of course our Prince is essentially shock-proof and crease-free. Don’t mind the bruises, scratches, bandages and, yes I forgot, the memory lapse. Prince is invincible!!!

So when was the last time you viewed a film where the heist-happy hero undertakes fifty adventures in museums and banks stealing diamonds and merchandise worth trillions?

John Abraham in “Dhoom”, Hrithik Roshan in “Dhoom 2″, Ajay Devgn in “Cash”?

You get the drift. Just float away in the stylish mumbo-jumbo that debutant director Kookie Gulati serves up with the swaggering flamboyance of an arms-merchant who loves his guns.

“Prince It’s Showtime” wears its super-cool shirt with the slogan ‘Come Watch Me’ with a little bit too much aggression. But if you love popcorn crunching adventure stories watch Vivek Oberoi play the hero.

Sathyan Anthikkad, the favorite director of family audiences is back with his new film 'Katha Thudarunnu'.

Sathyan's new film tells the story of Vidyalekshmi (Mamta Mohandas) who challenges the dictates of her family and decides to start a life with her love, Shanavas (Asif Ali).

Shanavas too faces severe opposition from his family members since he gets married to a girl from another caste. Soon they have a daughter whom they name Laya.

However fate has in store for Vidya something else, and soon she is left stranded in a busy city along with her kid.

Clash of the Titans - 3D english movie review
The super heroes have had their say. The wizards and hobbits have done it too. the ordinary mortal has flexed his muscles. The man-machine has also tried to bend the matrix. Now, it seems to be the turn of a new kind of hero who must save the world from impending doom: the demi-god.

After Percy Jackson, we have Perseus (Sam Worthington), the messiah who, as the film insists, combines the best of man and god and has a responsibility that seems to be even greater than the gods. He must save the entire human race from the wrath of renegade gods, like Hades (Ralph Fiennes), without succumbing to the allurements of super gods -- and super dads -- like Zeus (Liam Neeson). In the midst of his arduous battles, Zeus offers Perseus the opportunity to leave it all behind and cross over, to become the ruler of Olympus. Apna Perseus politely refuses. He prefers to be a man and serve mankind, he confesses. Clap, clap!

The film maybe a re-make of the 1980s film. But it actually doesn't feel dated. Firstly because it is so much like playstation push-button fantasies. And secondly because the entire drama is an explosion of special effects and digital exuberance which bring to life larger-than-life monsters and creatures cavorting in an exotic landscape. The core of the film is essentially the three battles which Perseus and his ragtag army of bedraggled men fight for survival. The first is with a giant scorpion, which seems indestructible, the second, with the slithery Medusa in her secret lair and the third with Kraken, the gangster god's last weapon which seems to be a strange mix of T-Rex and Godzilla. Needless to say, all this is nail-biting, popcorn- gobbling stuff.

A word about the 3D effects however. This time, it seems to be an after thought, which means, there's hardly anything that reaches out to you threateningly, as it did in Avatar. In fact, the only thing common with the SFX super storm, Avatar, is the presence of Sam Worthington. So, don't go looking for a similar blitzkreig and you might get the requisite bang for your buck.

Date Night english movie review

What happens when a married couple stop being husband and wife and end up as excellent room mates? They take time off from career and kids and go on a stylish date to re-infuse some romance in their crumbling relationship before it is too late.

That was all the Fosters (Steve Carell and Tina Fey) wanted when they realised that too much familiarity was actually breeding contempt. But what they ended up with was far more romantic than they'd bargained for. It was the romance of danger and the thrill of staying alive that lit up their lives and brought them together again as they tried to escape the bullets of a bunch of gangsters and crooked cops who insisted on extracting a `sticky computer thing' (read flash drive) from them. So, what might have been a candle light dinner metamorphosed into a mad night that saw them dirty dancing on a pole, desperately paddling a boat in Central Park and repeatedly gate crashing into a shirtless Mark Wahlberg's house, amongst other crazy stuff.

Watch the film for some great chemistry between Steve Carell and Tina Fey who paint a compelling portrait of a suburban couple and for a witty screenplay by Josh Klausner. It's light-hearted and great fun. As individuals, we go through it. But a married couple going through a mid-life crisis can be tragic, or if you believe director Shawn Levy, it could be hilarious.

Phil (Steve Carell) and Claire Foster (Tina Fey) are a sweet affable couple. They have steady jobs -- Phil as a tax lawyer and Claire as a real estate agent. But years of marriage and raising two naughty children have taken a toll and they are more like 'excellent roommates' than a passionate couple.

They go on a date night every week, but it's only slightly less boring than their daily existence. After they see their best friends break apart as a couple, their own frustrations come to surface. They know they have to do something. They begin with their date night.

Instead of going to their usual restaurant, they decide to go to Manhattan and dine at an expensive restaurant. But they have no reservation. So they steal a reservation that is in the name of Tripplehorns. Little do they know that they are in for big trouble. Turns out that the original Tripplehorns have a flash drive, which two goons are ready to kill the boring couple for.

Their explanation that they are actually the Fosters falls on deaf ears. So, they run for their lives and head to the police station. Sadly, it turns out that the goons are actually cops. Having almost no one to turn to, and nothing to save them from two murderous men and a whole Italian mafia behind them, they have no option left but to pull up their socks and fight them out on their own.

They encounter situations they couldn't imagine, and do things they wouldn't have done in a 100 re-births.

'Date Night' uses a cliched premise for an action-comedy. Yet, for a Hollywood flick to work the basic plot and also the final resolution, it need not be original -- but the situations, the tension, the chemistry between the lead pair and the comedy definitely need to be.

Thankfully, director Levy and writer Josh Klausner make ingenious situations that have enough original gags and witty dialogues going to have you in splits.

In one of the funniest sequences, a sports car and a taxi are stuck head on, engaged in a tug-of-war and chased by the police across Manhattan. They try different means, but fail to get either the cars separated or the police off their tail. They succeed only when the husband and wife work as a team.

This tribute to marriage and married couples is hilarious.

Oh yes, the couple come out unscathed in the end, but wise. They learn their lessons. They discover in the course of the night that their spouses, who they had taken for granted as boring, have much more in them that they had lost touch with. It took some effort, and a lot of zany situations, for them to discover it.

Manhattan provides the perfect background for the breakup and getting together of the couple.

Mark Whalberg in a shirtless role Salman Khan fans would rave about and James Franco in a quick cameo show good timing and complement the lead pair well.

"Date Night" is a good watch for married couples to laugh at themselves and for the unmarried to know where they could be headed.

Green Zone english movie review

Based on the book, Imperial Life in the Emerald City by Washington Post journalist Rajiv Chandrasekaran, Green Zone is an important film that questions the entire US offensive in Iraq which began
on the pretext of destroying the WMDs. But as it turns out, and as Sergeant Roy Miller (Matt Damon) discovers, there are no weapons of mass destruction to be found. So what's the war for? And why has an entire country been turned to rubble?

And in case, there's still room for doubt on the part of some diehard US patriots, the film maker uses his Iraqi protagonist to state the seminal truth: It is not for you decide what happens in this country, the local tells Damon. The film has been touted as the fourth Jason Bourne film, since it brings together the same team of Paul Greengrass and Matt Damon and uses a similar narrative technique of dizzy camera angles, breathless chase sequences and the fast cut.

A forewarning: don't go looking for the Bourne effect and you'll enjoy the relevance of this film which dares to question and debate.
