Rettachuzhi movie review
First comes 'Bum Bum Bumbara Kaathu', a feel-good melody rendered wonderfully by Rita and Violin Padma which narrates the beauty of a village during rains. The song tends to take you through different visuals with amazing music from Karthik Raja. It takes us to the next level; equally good are the lyrics by Palani Bharathi.
'Poochandi Kannazhagi', a fast beat peppy number rendered by Rita and Belly Raj, has some interesting lyrics and good instrumentations with some traditional flavour.
'Para Para Kili' is a melody rendered by Rahul Nambiar and Deepa Mariam. Rahul Nambiar stands out with his mesmerizing voice though he sings only few bits in between.
Check out Rettachuzhi songs
'Pattaalam Paaruda' starts with a rhyming chorus rendered by kids. It is a fast-beat peppy number with a folksy touch. The lyrics penned by V. Ramasamy narrate the different heroic activities of the kids. This beautiful chorus is by V.K.S. Fowsia, Arman Mallik and Sarwan.
'Naan Endru Sol', a sad melody sung by Hariharan, Haricharan and Sriram Parthasarathy, is about the pain of separation and the singers have rendered it in the right way.
'Poochandi Kannazhagi 1', another version of the second song, is rendered by Hariharan and Shreya Ghoshal. Here the beats are a little faster making it more peppy. Get ready to shake your legs when you hear it.
'Naan Endru Sol 1' is another sad melody rendered by Hariharan, who has brought the pain of separation in his voice.

Guru Sishyan movie review
Director Sakthi Chidambaram is synonymous to comedy films as his past flicks are loaded with humour which always found favour with front-benchers. The earthy fun in his films have been his signature style.
'Guru Sishyan', inspired by the title of a yesteryear flick starring Rajinikanth, brings together veteran war horse Sathyaraj with director-turned-hero Sundar C at the helm of affairs.
Sakthi Chidambaram has opted for the routine route as he brings in glamour in the form of Shruthi Prakash (Hema Malini) and Santhanam to bring the roof down in laughter in the company of Sathyaraj and Sundar.
A simple storyline laced with commercial elements (in the form of glamour and action) is what Sakthi Chidambaram has opted for in 'Guru Sishyan'. Seemingly aimed to satisfy a target audience, Sakthi fairly succeeds in his attempt.
The movie is set in Rajapalayam, where Guru Moorthy (Sathyaraj), referred as 'Kaalu' is a bigwig. A money-lender by profession, Guru is a rich and influential man in the town.
Enters Eeeti (Sundar C). He is an individual with a never care never mind attitude. He is always behind money and is ready to do anything for the currency. He meets Guru and gets close to him. They become buddies. Now comes Mahalakshmi (Saranya). Guru is against her and ensures that her peace of mind is shattered every time.
Cut to past, it is revealed that Guru and Mahalakshmi were happily married and split due to some problems over a suicide in their family. Events take a turn, when Eeeti reveals that he is the younger brother of Mahalakshmi. It leads to interesting events that lead to the reunion of the estranged couple.
Sathyaraj, who has essayed similar roles in few of his recent films, does his act well, while Sundar C chips in his with his best. Santhanam has no greater screen space while Hema Malini does the job of oozing glamour appearing in skimpy costumes now and then singing romantic duets.
Saranya in the company of Sathyaraj too evoke humour. Dheena's racy musical score with funny lyrics in a couple of songs are interesting. More a spoof, the film has comical one-liners that would go down well with the so called C centre audience.

Goripalayam movie review
lot was expected from Rasu Madhuravan in 'Goripalayam', as he enthralled the family audiences with the feel-good entertainer 'Mayandi Kudumbathar'. But he has let down the fans coming up with a gory tale.
For, 'Goripalayam' is full of violence with blood spilling on the screen. The movie is nothing but a group of men running around with sickles and aruvals and interestingly there is no police anywhere. And Madurai has been portrayed as a violent and bloodbath town.
Though there are many emotional scenes in the movie, all gets missed with the filmmaker giving more thrust on violent scenes. Especially the second half is full of chase and stunts and in almost every reel a murder happens. The movie's theme seems to have been borrowed heavily from 'Subramaniapuram' and 'Renigunta'.
The film essentially talks about a group of youngsters, who goes on the wrong side of their lives, and eventually try to correct them. But the obstacles that they face once they try to reform is all what 'Goripalayam' is about.
As the title suggests, the whole movie is set in Goripalayam, a neighborhood in Madurai. The director has cast a group of youngsters in the lead roles besides a few filmmakers who worked in his previous films.
In a bid to get detailing of the Madurai town right, the director has missed out on the screenplay. Scenes unfold in a hurry and there are enough deaths, murders, chase and stunt sequences that makes you squirm in your seats.
Azhagar (Harish), son of a police constable, is tempted to take bad habits seeing his father in his younger days. Azhagar along with his friends A to Z (Ramakrishnan) Azhagappa (Manivannan) and Inippu Murugan (Prakash) lead a callous life smoking ganja all time.
They incur the wrath of everyone though they are good-hearted and ready to help others. Fate comes in the form of rich and influential Kazhuvanadhan's (Alex) family. His sons Karutha Pandi (Nandha Periyasamy) and Viruman (Ravi Maria) are feared by everyone.
The brothers mistake their sister of falling in love with Azhagar and kills her. They cover it up as suicide. Now they go behind Azhagar. But sequence of events leaves Kazhuvanathan dead and the blame falls on the four friends.
In a bid to take revenge on them, Viruman hires a contract killer Pandi (Vikranth), who is in the business only to educate his young brother. Whats happens after this forms the climax. It is gore and bloodshed all the way.
Ramakrishna, Harish and Vikranth have good screen space while Poongodi and Swasika do their part well. Singam Puli does an extension of what he did in 'Mayandi... ' Ravi Maria and Nandha Periyasamy are too loud.
Sabesh Murali's background score and Balabharani's camera work worth a mention. Had Rasu Madhuravan concentrated more on screenplay and cut down those needless violent scenes, 'Goripalayam' could have been a better fare.

Thipparahalli Tharlegalu movie review
Buzz up!
Thipparahalli Tharalegalu is a political satire. Despite having talented actors like Komal Kumar, S Narayan, Om Prakash Rao, Ambareesh and Umashri, the movie fails to make an impact on the audience. The Director is the whole and sole responsible for this failure. He has chosen an illogical script, in which several sequences do not have cohesive relationship between one and another sequence and many of them seem to be forced in it.

Sathya movie review
The highly expected big budget Kannada film starring superstar Shivarajkumar and sizzling Genelia is a mediocre film with action feast. There are some melodious tunes, absorbing cinematography and quick screenplay from the debutant director. But the essence is not what expected. The second half dominated with Telugu language speaking characters in this Kannada film is a big drain for Kannada audience. Director Raghav Loki exercise at home in this direction deserved some modification. Are we watching a Telugu film or Kannada film the doubt obviously appears in the mind!
Sathya is a straightforward man with nerves and body of steel (we are not joking – look at how he fights). He can put down any number of opponents who come to finish him off. This looks pretty outdated. Sathya is modern in his outfits, grandeur in his approach. Such a youngster does not keep a mobile and surprisingly his family members do not have one. This is the mobile zamana. One such would have come to his help and for producer there could have been lot of savings in the first half. Sathya looking at the girl who disturbed him in the Mantralalam temple is sitting before his parents and sister in the train. He does not have any means to express it. From Mantralaya Sathya arrives even before his parents come and that surprises them. Sathya's sister strongly suspects that he had found his lover and then the hunt starts for Veda. When Sathya and his friends find the important clue of Veda that takes Sathya to Curnool. Sathya has so far not met Veda and Veda in turn without knowing it is Sathya had admired the mouth organ instrument tune played by him. With such a scenario Sathya in the hot city dominated by Ranga Reddy finds Veda is his sister. In Curnool the biggest clout is enjoyed by Ranga Reddy and anyone seeing at his sister Veda is a crime. He has a battalion of weapon holding sleuths who can evaporate anyone. For Sathya the two tasks are to meet Veda and convince her that he is in love with her. The nature of Sathya is such that when he decides once he cannot change at any cost. The second task for him is Veda's brother Ranga Reddy who give sleepless nights for him.
What Veda is telling is interesting part of the cinema. She is of the opinion that it is humanity that is very important. Knowing the brutal history of her brothers she had not gone to the extent of loving any boy in her life. She has thus decided humanity is important than love. But what Sathya says is that humanity is nothing but love. After a few encounters with the brothers of Veda in the 'He Man' style Sathya reduce the strength of Ranga Reddy. What he wants from Veda is 'I Love You' in reciprocation of his pure love. Whether that happens? You have to watch this cinema.
Shivarajakumar is superb once again. He is too good in dance and action. His hairstyle is different in this film is OK. The jet girl Genelia is scintillating. She looks really fair and lovely in the song Lovely Lovely Fair and Lovely. Srinath, Vinayaprakash, Sangeetha, Bullet Prakash, Komalkumar have added extra strength to the film.
Four of the seven songs scored by Gurukiran in his 50th film 'Sathya in Love' are melodious, peppy and worth hearing again. M.R.Seenu cinematography gives the perfect color, mood and exotic feeling for the film.

Online Krishna Nee Late Aagi Baaro Kannada Movie Review And Wallpapers

Krishna Nee Late Aagi Baaro movie review
This is a good laugh riot for the summer vacation. With multiple responsibilities Mohan has done a neat work to grab the attention and his work is exceptional in the second half. Firstly his niche for comedy, punching dialogues is well supported by lead actors. In addition to it Pravin Godkhindi music is a major plus point of the film. In the songs the grandeur of V Ravichandran films are seen and in screenplay plus dialogues Mohan is another Ramesh Aravind in the making.
Sundar (Mohan) is a fashion photographer and Krishna (Ramesh Aravind) affectionately called as Krish is the only male lecturer in the female college. Krish has great aversion to girls and he wants to be a bachelor throughout his life. His intention is to sit on ‘Padmasana’ (yoga posture) in the water like how his mentor Swamiji has done. On the other hand Sunder has a beautiful girl friend Andy (Neethu) but the one waiting for Krish in the house is Lakshmi (Nidhi Subbaiah) who is very traditional.

Ramesh Aravind makes a cake walk, Mohan is mesmerizing, Neethu is luscious, Nidhi is a treat to watch in her role. Dattanna and Sunder as Iyengars give the best among all in the supporting roles.
In the dialogues department Mohan takes full credit for his up to date style. He is a well informed person on the happenings in society one would know from his dialogues.
Pravin Godkindi the classical musician with great expertise in flute has showed exemplary skill. Three of his songs are well scored and captured beautifully on the exotic locations. When the camera is placed in the Kerala surroundings, the screen becomes nature friendly. Cameraman Nageshwara Rao deserves applause for his fine work.
This is not disappointing at all. Mohan has taken care well of his directorial venture. Go watch it.

Parole movie review
Director Shekhar has selected a good story for his second movie, but fails to impress with narration, which is often amateurish. Some of the sequences take us back 20 years, and do not impress at all. Perhaps the director could have added some freshness to the script and concentrated more on narration, to make it lively. But he comes to grips in the second-half, with a semblance of accuracy in the narration.
The story revolves around aged Shanthamurthy (B Suresha), who kills four of his friends, without getting caught by the police. The cop in charge (Kishore) has a tough task on hand to catch the killer. While the friends, Gopi (Likhit Shetty), Vishwas (Sharath), Sharath (Jaani), are killed in cold blood, the police try to catch the killer while he is plotting to kill Raj (Pradeep), son of a politician.
The reason behind these murders is that Shanthamurthy's son Rahul (Suraj) was killed by the four. Gopi hated Rahul for being in love with Nikhitha (Supreetha), as he loved her too. The friends go to jail and are released after getting parole. Dramatic events take place after their release, but the story ends on a happy note.

Ijjodu movie review
The fire in ‘Garam Hava’ director M.S.Sathyu is missing. The delectable touch of the prolific director who is coming back after twelve years is not seen because consuming more time he tells a wafer thin subject. Except one touching conversation between the protagonist Meera Jasmine and Anirudh – the clash of tradition and modernity, there are not appreciable sensitive elements attempted by veteran director. The redeeming features of ‘Ijjodu’ are good performances, one lovely song from MD Pallavi and GS Bhasker’s expertise in camera.
M.S.Sathyu who directed the classics in Kannada like ‘Bara’ and ‘Minchina Ota’ has caught hold of a big business house in giving this film ‘Ijjodu’ (Incompatible) but he is incompatible with the narration that is jaded and protracted. The point, the director wants to make, arrives late in a cool and composed style.
In the village dominated by chieftain (played by Ramakrishna) Anand (Anirudh) comes to study the ancient architecture as photo journalist. He takes shelter in the village chieftain where Channi (Meera Jasmine) is also living. There is a soldier Balarama (Sathya) and his wife in the village who marries Venkatesha on hearing the death of her husband in the war. The return of Balarama surprises her and eventually Balarama becomes mad.
Director Sathyu explaining all these developments in flash back techniques arrives to the life of Channi who is Devadasi. When the village was affected with major disease her parents have taken oath to make Channi as Devadasi. Believing the guidelines set by her parents Channi the prostitute comes into an argument with Anand. He is not ready to accept her views. This is where we see director M.S.Sathyu when the clash of tradition and modern thoughts clash.
When Anand declines the prostitution and asks Channi to make a different living she bounces back saying if he is ready to give her a proper living. Baffled with this sudden outburst Anand is not in a position to answer Channi. Left with no option Channi commits suicide. Anand feels he has killed Channi and curses himself.
It is a delectable performance from Meera Jasmine and Anirudh. Meera Jasmine learning Kannada and doing the dubbing on the spot scores over all. Anirudh, son in law of Dr Vishnuvardhana giving up the image of hero of commercial films has shown excellent skill. Sathya as soldier occupies attention for his dialogues and innocence. The opening choreography in the film is well conceived.
Manikanth Khadri gives one lovely song that is sung by MD Pallavi. The nature beauty and indoor shots from GS Bhasker is competent enough to enter the awards fray.

Naanu Nanna Kanasu Ramesh movie review
It's a masterpiece by director Prakash Rai who has brilliantly brought on to the big screen a story (Radha Mohan) that portrays the emotional bond between a father and daughter. With neat script and excellent narration laced with lively dialogues, the director, in his maiden venture, scores full marks for his acting too which is incredible. It is a `must watch family movie' for all age groups without a single dull moment. Each sequence is so well placed that you become part of the story.
It all begins with Raj Uthappa (Prakash Rai) narrating his emotional bond with his daughter Kanasu (Amulya) to his friend Jayanth (Ramesh Aravind). Kanasu, as a child, an adolescent and a teenager. At each stage of her life, Uthappa has an interesting anecdote to narrate. Kanasu goes to school, demands a bicycle from Uthappa, gets a love letter from her classmate, goes to Delhi for higher studies and falls in love with Joginder Singh (Kawaljith Singh). Each incident shocks Uthappa, but he had no choice but compromise. While Uthappa is highly tradiditonal, his wife Kalpana (Sirtara) is progressive, who always supports Kanasu. How do people who are ageing feel when they face such situations? Watch this movie with your family for the answer.
It's Prakash Rai who leads the pack of talented artistes with his amazing performance. Sitara is equally good. Achyuth Kumar, Rajesh, Ruthu, Kawaljith Singh are outstanding. Amulya deserves a special mention for her matured acting. While Anant Urs excels in camera work, Hamsalekha walks away with full honours for his brilliant musical numbers.

Film: 'Nooru Janmaku'; Producer: Vinay Lad; Writer and Director: Nagathihalli Chandrashekhar; Cinemetographer; Santhosh Kumar Pathaje; Music: Mano Murthy; Cast: Santhosh, Aindrita Ray, Adarsh, Sharan, Bhavya, Bank Janardhan. Rating: **
Nagathihalli Chandrashekhar, a well-known writer and columnist, is a director who raises the expectation level of audiences whenever he makes films. Naturally, when Nagathihalli announced he will be directing a film which centres around the issue of global recession, there were huge expectations.
But unfortunately the director has let his fans down.
Many things have gone horribly wrong in this film, including the selection of actors.
Nagathihalli has written the script with some superficial ideas on the subject without going deep into the background and efects of recession.
Nagathihalli has concentrated more on creating grandeur, but the soul is missing in the film. Some uninspiring and unwanted sequences makes the film drag at times.
The director has tried to cover up the shortcomings in his screenplay by presenting the film as a dazzling spectacle with the Star cruise of Macau and the fantastic Hong Kong outdoors as the backdrop.
But these things do not make a good film and the weak screenplay and ordinary performances by the actors make the film exasperating to watch at most times.
Yet, there are some sequences where the vintage Nagathihalli is seen. The climax is really well done. Nagathihalli also shines in a few sequences which show how a victim of job loss is tormented.
The story revolves around Santhosh, who is the head of a private firm. He hires Aindrita and she performs quite well and brings in good profits for the firm.
Santhosh, who initially doubted Aindrita's calibre, also falls in love with her, but she surprises him by introducing him to her fiance.
After the recession, Santhosh again meets Aindrita in Hong Kong and Macau.
The plus point in the film is Aindrita's performance, which really stands out. Santhosh fairs alright.
The music by Mano Murthy is average. Santhosh Kumar Pathaaje's camera work is fantastic.
'Nooru Janmaku' could have been a better film if Nagathihalli had done better work on his script. In the end, it is a dull film in comparison to Nagathihalli's earlier efforts.

Set in ancient Egypt under Roman rule, 'Agora' follows the brilliant and beautiful astronomer Hypatia (Rachel Weisz) who leads a group of disciples fighting to save the wisdom of the Ancient World, as violent religious upheaval spills into the streets of Alexandria. Among these disciples are two men competing for her heart: the witty, privileged Orestes (Oscar Isaac) and Davus (Max Minghella), Hypatia's young slave, who is torn between his secret love for her and the freedom he knows can be his if he chooses to join the unstoppable surge of the Christians. set. There’s no question that there are certain pleasures to be found in Micmacs; it looks wonderful, with some great production design and cinematography by Tetsuo Nagata, and Jeunet’s use of classic Max Steiner music definitely adds to the fun. But these enjoyments are really surface-level only, and the film doesn’t have enough weight to hold them up. I certainly wanted to like this one more than I did, and I’m sure many of you will disagree with my assessment and enjoy yourselves, anyway, but Micmacs ultimately isn’t the best example of what Jean-Pierre Jeunet is capable of.

Micmacs movie review
There comes a time in every filmmaker’s career when it suddenly feels like they’re coasting. They’ve made a name for themselves, had some success and challenged themselves in one way or another, so now it’s time to take it easy, do what they do best and give the people what they want. Perhaps they’re taking a break before they try to do something big again, or maybe they’re paying off the debt of a previous flop, but the one thing they’re not doing is taking any risks. It’s the same-old, same-old and while it might please the fans, the real admirers probably won’t be pleased. It happens more often than we’d like to admit, but, unfortunately, it does happen.
This is the case with Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Micmacs, the latest from the director who gave us Amelie, Delicatessen and City of Lost Children (the latter two co-directed with Marc Caro). Those films earned him comparisons to Terry Gilliam and Tim Burton, but Jeunet proved he had a unique and witty cinematic style that he could call his own and with the international popularity of Amelie, audiences everywhere took notice, granting this very talented director a lot of leeway to make films in his own style. With his next film, 2004’s A Very Long Engagement, he decided to stray from the style of his previous films and attempt something more dramatic, and though the film was generally well-received, Jeunet decided to go back to the well of whimsy with Micmacs, with very mixed results. While casual fans should be pleased, anyone interested in watching a filmmaker grow artistically (as Jeunet had been) will shrug and leave disappointed.
Like his fellow fantasists Gilliam and Burton, Jeunet’s detractors have often described him as a stylist first and storyteller second. I’ve never subscribed to that theory until now — I always felt a connection to his offbeat characters and stories — but with Micmacs, he either has failed to help us make that connection or he simply doesn’t care enough himself. Part of the problem is that the film hangs on the flimsiest of plotlines: Homeless man Dany Boon seeks revenge on the feuding weapons manufacturers responsible for the landmine that killed his parents and the bullet in his head (a result a drive-by shooting) by teaming up with a rag-tag group of other homeless people, all of them with their own set of special skills. A picture like this should hook us in from the very start or it’s never going to get off the ground, and Micmacs’ opening already suggests that Jeunet isn’t breaking any new ground here; whimsy for whimsy’s sake will only yield limited results, especially without a real story in place. Although it’s filled with a number of the filmmaker’s patented set pieces, Micmacs is never as engaging as it would like to be. Numerous sequences that resemble Rube Goldberg meets Warner Brothers cartoons are definitely amusing to watch and offer some trademark Jeunet imagery, but there’s no reason to care about what we’re seeing. Boon’s plight should be a moving one, but for Jeunet it feels more like an excuse to shoot his regular co-star Dominique Pinon out of a giant cannon.
Pinon’s presence represents another problem with Micmacs: although the film is very well cast, almost none of these characters register with the audience. Boon’s homeless “family” is filled with faces out of the Jeunet central casting book, but we never really learn who they are, nor do we understand why they follow Boon’s character through the lengths that they do. Just because they’re “characters” doesn’t really give them character to portray and though the film is energetically performed by all (with special recognition going to the charming Marie-Julie Baup), they’re just figures for Jeunet’s giant Parisian play set. There’s no question that there are certain pleasures to be found in Micmacs; it looks wonderful, with some great production design and cinematography by Tetsuo Nagata, and Jeunet’s use of classic Max Steiner music definitely adds to the fun. George A. Romero's Survival of the Dead movie review
Romero's Day of the Dead is my best film of all time. Dawn of the Dead my second. But he has really changed. The script on this is something a high school student would write. And it has zombies with no make up for some reason. Zombies that don't even growl. And(no spoiler I promise), horses that come to the defense of zombies. In fact, out of the 90 minute film, zombies are hardly involved. The script deals mostly with two fighting families. It might be that Romero has changed for the worse because he doesn't work with the same people he did with "Dawn" and "Day". But this film is a major let down. Please George retire. You created 3 of the best zombie movies ever made. But this film is so bad, I would rather watch Martha Stewart in the leaGeorge Romero hasn't really done a zombie film as good as anything since the original Dead trilogy. Land of the Dead probably gets put down more often than it deserves as the film only seems to get better with each viewing while Diary of the Dead has the opposite effect as the flaws seem more apparent the more it's watched. Survival is a bit different, but isn't really anything new. One of the best things about this film is that there's a bit of continuity as 'Nicotine' Crocket had a brief appearance in Diary and is now a main character in Survival. Crocket is really the highlight of the film and is basically a modernized version of Captain Rhodes from Day of the Dead. The CGI in the film seemed to hurt it more than anything else though. While it looked best during the fire extinguisher kill, it stuck out like a sore thumb the rest of the time whether it was a plethora of decapitated heads still moaning or a hot dog on a barbecue fork being shoved into someone's head. The CGI used isn't terrible, but it isn't the best either. So it's in that middle ground that looks somewhat decent, but takes you out of the film because you know it's fake. The storyline takes some odd turns, as well. Apparently, people don't need to be bitten to turn into a zombie anymore. When you die, you automatically come back as one of them unless somebody puts a bullet in your head. And for whatever reason, don't accidentally swallow some of their blood. The search for a food substitute for the zombies was weird, as well. Despite those few new elements introduced, it seems like Romero is just retreading old ground. It's just films like this that certify the fact that the whole zombie idea has been bled dry and that's coming from a fan of zombie cinema. If the guy who helped create some of the most influential horror films of our time continues to make subpar films on the subjWriter-director George A. Romero, who invented the modern zombie film with 1968's Night of the Living Dead, returns to the graveyard for Survival of the Dead, the fifth sequel (of sorts) to his landmark movie, with his trademark gore and social commentary intact. Survival picks up shortly after the events of 2008's Diary of the Dead, which offered a revisionist take on the zombie outbreak in Night; here, a minor character from Diary (Alan Van Sprang) takes center stage with his team of fellow mercenary soldiers as they make their way to remote Plum Island, where two feuding Irish families sort out the best way to deal with the living dead. As is often the case with Romero's films, the ideas don't always match the execution--his dialogue and characters remain painfully stock at times, and the CGI elements of the effects look amateurish--but at its core, the picture retains his fascination for entropy in American society, as personified by the twin family patriarchs, who cling stubbornly to their beliefs as their world literally dies around them. Parallels between this story and the conservative movement of the early 21st century are obvious, and while others have made more artful statements about the situation, Romero once again cuts to the bloody heart of the matter. Limited in scope and budget, Survival isn't on par with Night or 1978's Dawn of the Dead, but it's a watchable and intriguing addition to his zombie canon. --Paul Gaitaect, then maybe it's time to put the idea to rest and move on. d of the next "Terminator" flick.

Prince of Persia movie review
In many modern games, you rain death upon your enemies; how refreshing, then, that your main task in Prince of Persia is to breathe life into a darkening world. That doesn't mean that the forces of evil aren't on your tail in this open-world platformer, but the most indelible moments of this enchanting journey are uplifting, rather than destructive. Similarly, the latest iteration in this long-running franchise is a rejuvenation for the series, and it's an ambitious one, offering up a new titular prince and casting certain game traditions aside in favor of player immersion. And for the most part it succeeds, eliminating illusion-breaking mechanics like game-over screens and long loading times in the process. This re-imagining comes with a few caveats, however, and if you're a longtime series fan, you'll quickly discover--and possibly resent--that Prince of Persia is, far and away, the easiest game in the series. But if you can clear your mind and let the game's magic wash over you, its easygoing joy and visual beauty will charm you into forgiving a sprinkling of flaw

But if you can clear your mind and let the game's magic wash over you, its easygoing joy and visual beauty will charm you into forgiving a sprinkling of flaws.
The prince's sword is sharper than his tongue.
In some ways, Prince of Persia represents a return to Sands of Time's storybook vibe, which had been somewhat lost in that game's two sequels. Yet our new hero isn't exactly Prince Charming, but rather a wisecracking nomad interested only in his donkey (named Farah, in one of several nods to previous games) and the riches she apparently carries. His royal status is referenced but never fully explored, though his companion Elika is clearly a princess, and as the game progresses, you'll become much more invested in her past than the prince's. Together, they seek to imprison the evil god Ahriman, who has been inexplicably set free by Elika's own father. To do so, they must restore a series of fertile grounds to their former fecund glory, thereby banishing the inky black corruption that has enveloped the land. Storytelling isn't the game's strong suit, and the dismissive, often unlikeable prince is hardly beguiling, a poor fit for the captivating journey ahead. Thankfully, Elika exudes enough charm for the both of them, and the relationship they slowly forge lends plenty of emotional impact to the game's final moments.
This relationship enriches the very core of the experience, given that Elika is not your standard game sidekick. She isn't just a helpless companion, but an important part of a number of gameplay mechanics. As the prince, you will pull off moves familiar to franchise fans: jumping, climbing, scaling, and wallrunning among them. There are also a few new acrobatics to play with, such as the aptly named roofrun, where the prince scuttles along the roof in a vaguely simian manner. But if the moves are familiar, Elika's presence enriches and enhances them. She will jump on your back as you scale across vines, reach for your helping hand as you climb, and perform an elegant pas de deux with you when you need to pass her on a narrow beam. In some ways, this relationship recalls that of Ico and Yorda in 2001's ICO.
While in ICO Yorda was totally dependent on her companion, here Elika is far more helpful to the prince than he is to her. She is, in fact, your constant savior, because she will not, and cannot, allow you to die. Should you fall, Elika will grab you by the wrist and whisk you to safety--meaning the last checkpoint. There is a checkpoint at almost every platform, so aside from possibly having to repeat a few seconds of gameplay, there is absolutely no penalty for plummeting to your doom. You will never see the words "game over," and you won't need to save and reload before difficult sequences. Nor will you need to ever puzzle over how to make it from point A to point B: Elika can fire off a magical homing orb that will show you the precise way of getting to your destination. Combined with simple platforming controls that require a minimum of button presses, these facets make Prince of Persia one of the easiest games you'll play all year. s.
